The surgery would be employed to remove the drusen. However, the value of such a macular degeneration treatments removal is uncertain relative to the risks in involved with the surgery. As such, at present the FDA does not approve any surgical procedures for dry macular degeneration. It is important to note that none of the surgeries can cure the condition. There is still uncertainty and speculation regarding the causes of macular degeneration. Until such time as the root causes can be found, surgical options are likely to remain limited to preserving existing vision or slowing degeneration.
